How to choose colours for your newborn photography session
First of all, thank you! You are likely on this page because you have booked your newborn, or older baby, photography session with me and I am so thrilled you have chosen me for the experience of having your precious baby photographed soon!
You may have already booked a maternity session, but if you haven’t you can find out all about my maternity photography in Lincoln sessions and we can take a look at any of these colours in person then too!
Oftentimes, people find out if they are team pink or team blue just before booking a newborn session in Lincoln and this usually sways that first initial colour choice…
I love muted colour palettes and believe this is the best way to keep your images timeless. I will often use woody props in your session to help with this too and because this is my style and if you have a favourite prop be sure to let me know! I have a real variety of colours available in my photography studio in Lincoln and recommend choosing one key colour to be accented by one or two others (usually cream and/or grey). Think about where you are going to display your images before making your choice, will they be in the nursery/child’s bedroom and if so what is the colour scheme in that room? Will they be on display in the living room or dining room? Perhaps a playroom? Think about the colours that you either have, or want to have, in those rooms and ensure at least one of those colours is in your images.
Don’t just think about the newborn session as a standalone session either, think about bringing a colour from their newborn photography session into their sitter session, and then bringing that colour through to a cake smash session too. Before you know it your baby will be a year old and you will have a gorgeous selection of coordinating portraits from their first year to create a beautiful gallery wall installation in the most used room in your house or perhaps up the staircase? Stunning!
Let’s go through the main colour palettes and how they work with other accent colours to give you an idea of how these colours could all look for your baby’s newborn photography session with Mama Bear Photography.
PINK & PURPLE
Always the top choice for girly sessions and absolutely one of my favourites to shoot with too, pink is such a versatile colour and works really well with purple, grey and cream. We can go for all pink in either dark or light tones depending on your preference so don’t feel you have to choose another colour if you want to celebrate all things pink!
We can also accent with some beautiful floral fabrics as well which really do look stunning…
BLUE
There are so many options when it comes to blue that it makes it a very popular choice for 95% of my boy sessions, and some girly ones too, and it’s another super versatile colour to work with a whole range of accent colours. See which tone you prefer…
For the perfect girly blue, I am so in love with duck egg blue so went on a bit of a buying frenzy to add this colour into my palettes so girls could look beautiful in a softer blue as well!
GREEN
If you like blue but don’t want to be too traditional, green is often a really nice alternative. It works well for baby boys and girls and looks gorgeous with a grey wrap or plenty of green on green…
BROWN
As you can tell from the amount of wood I use in my sets and props I love an earthy feel to my images. Having a baby is the most natural thing in the world so I like to represent that by using these rich, muted tones and brown shades look incredible on all babies. For a complementary colour I recommend cream, grey doesn’t complement the darker brown tones as nicely and cream adds a bit of a lighter tone in which adds a lovely balance to the overall gallery.
GREY
This beautiful colour makes an appearance in almost every session and is fast becoming a first choice colour for many rather than just an accent colour…
CREAM/WHITE
A beautiful choice when you want pure, classic and timeless. Gorgeous for girls and boys and with a range of complementary bonnets and headbands too this is a lovely standalone choice as well as a beautiful accent…
YELLOW
This colour is definitely gaining popularity, and the more it is requested the more pieces I keep buying! I still prefer to shoot this in a more muted way than super bright but it really is a colour that just makes you feel happy!
RED
Often reserved for Christmas, girls called Poppy, Ruby or Scarlett (!), or because it might be someone’s favourite colour…
If there is a colour that would suit your home perfectly that you don’t see here then let me know, with as much notice as possible, and I can see if we can work it into my style and colour palettes. Hopefully these images have helped steer you towards your perfect colour combination for your newborn photography session in Lincoln but if you have any questions at all, or would like to make any requests for specific inclusions such as stars, or a headband or bonnet you have seen just let me know!
